The results were announced at an awards event at Walsall Football Club on Friday 12 May 2023 and finalists included both local authorities and private sector companies.

As winner of the ‘Large Employer of the Year’ category, the judging panel described Walsall Council as a true leader in providing apprenticeship opportunities and going above and beyond to ensure apprentices succeed. The council was praised for taking the time to remove any barriers to learning, showing care and compassion to meet the needs of all apprentices it employs via its truly inclusive approach. One example of this was the launch of the council’s care leaver apprenticeship programme in February 2021 ensuring care leavers have access to apprenticeship opportunities.

The judging panel also referred to the council meeting the public sector target of having at least 2.3% of its headcount employed on apprenticeships consecutively for five years. Currently, this stands at 5.4% at Walsall Council, which equates to 368 apprentices. So far, 285 apprentices have completed their programme.
