Advice for Walsall retailers to act now as disposable vapes ban comes into force this June

Published on

Walsall retailers are being advised by Walsall Council’s Trading Standards team to act now in advance of the disposable vapes ban, which comes into force in June.

Image depicts disposable or single use vapes.
Businesses will not be allowed to sell or supply single use or disposable vapes from 1 June 2025.

From 1 June 2025, it will be illegal for businesses to sell or supply single use or ‘disposable’ vapes. This applies to sales online and in shops and all vapes whether or not they contain nicotine. This ban will aim to protect public health and the environment. Reusable vapes (such as refillable and rechargeable vapes) can be continued to be sold or supplied.

Walsall retailers should now consider stopping buying new stock of single use vapes, and sell all current stock before 1 June 2025, before buying vapes that follow the new regulations.

As well as stopping the sale or supply of single use vapes from 1 June, retailers must also remove any remaining single use vapes from their store or online store, separate them from other goods in a storeroom and label them as ‘not for sale’ whilst arranging for them to be collected by a registered vape recycling service.

Retailers who continue to sell single use vapes after 1 June will be subject to a stop or penalty notice. Repeated offences may result in an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to two years. Trading Standards will also seize any single use vapes and retailers may be liable for paying any costs of disposing of seized stock.

“ With the disposable vapes ban coming into force soon, now is the time to take action to ensure you are not selling or supplying single use vapes from 1 June.

Single use vapes are often thrown away as litter, which spoils our communities and introduces harmful substances into the soil, rivers and streams. They also end up in landfill and can cause fires.

The ban applies to anyone selling or supplying single use vapes. If you break the ban, we will take action.

Our Trading Standards team are meeting with retailers across the borough to check on compliance and will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Our advice is don’t get caught out further down the line. Check the guidance that has been set out and act now to ensure you are ready by 1 June. “

Leader of Walsall Council
