Elective home education (EHE) guidance for mainstream schools

This guidance is intended to inform Walsall schools and academies trusts of the recommended process they are to follow when a parent/guardian advises they have decided or are considering home education for their child.

School receives EHE enquiry from parent/carer (no written notification)

School notifies local authority

School sends a copy of the parent/guardian's written notification and completed information gathering form to EHEMailbox@walsall.gov.uk

If the child has an EHCP, copy SEN@walsall.gov.uk into the email

School removes the child from roll

Take the child off roll immediately. The school may wish to delay informing admissions by 10 working days to allow for a 3-way meeting.

School offers pre-EHE meeting

  1. School checks the availability of the EHE officer.
  2. School contacts the parent/carer to arrange a time to meet.
  3. Parent/carer accepts or declines the meeting.

Decision made

If parent/carer accepts the meeting:

  1. The school coordinates a 3-way meeting once they have received notification of the EHE officer's availability.
  2. During the meeting, options are explored.
  3. A decision is made:
    • No to EHE – child returns on school roll
    • Yes to EHE – School notifies the schools admissions team, and child is registered as EHE

If parent/carer declines the meeting:

  • the school notifies the schools admissions team
  • the child is registered as EHE
