Self help resources for parents

Self-help, practical advice and guidance

See our parent and carers webpages for information you can share with the parents and carers you are supporting.

There are online self-help tools for parents and carers that practitioners can also access, free of charge. All you need is a Walsall postcode.

If you need any further information, you can contact the Early Help parenting team.

Identifying when parents and carers need support

Some parents and carers may benefit from a parenting programme.

Parents tell us they are:

  • overwhelmed often and struggling to cope with children’s behaviour
  • yelling a lot or saying the same thing over and over to children
  • they are using threats to get children to behave
  • they are giving in for the peace and quiet

Parents tell us that they don't know what to do when they see their children:

  • getting angry easily and struggling to manage this in ways that don’t hurt themselves or others
  • withdrawing and not talking
  • being worried or anxious
  • screaming and yelling
  • damaging things
  • stealing things
  • not doing well at school, or getting into trouble with school work
  • going missing
  • having lots of problems with friendships
  • often not following instructions or rules
  • getting overwhelmed with emotions that they can’t seem to handle
  • not responding well to praise
  • change their usual way of behaving

Parents may need more specialised or bespoke support if they:

  • have tried parenting programmes before but haven’t found them much help
  • feel continually overwhelmed by their parenting role or struggle to see how any of their behaviour affects their children
  • are so focused on the behaviour of their children that they struggle to praise, have a positive relationship with their child, or understand what might be behind behaviours
  • are not able to fully meet their child needs, or struggle to prioritise their child’s needs over their own needs
  • had poor experiences themselves of being parented
  • faced adverse childhood experiences or trauma in their own childhood or adulthood
