Types of grave

Find out about the availability of graves in Walsall.

Traditional sections

Traditional sections are typically found in old cemeteries. They are distinguished by large memorials which often span the full length and width of the graves.

Lawn sections

These are sections where memorials of a set size are placed at the head end of the grave space.

Small items of memorabilia (such as vases) can be placed in front of the headstone but must not spread over the length of the grave. The remainder of the grave space is grassed over.

All new full graves in Walsall Council cemeteries are on lawn sections.

Baby sections

These are sections where small graves are available for the burial of babies and very young children.

Memorials and memorabilia can be placed along the full length and width of the grave space.

To help preserve memorabilia, new baby sections are topped with a layer of gravel.

Muslim sections

The graves on Muslim sections are oriented so that the deceased faces North-East.

Full grave Muslim sections are laid out in the same way as the lawn sections. Memorials of a set size are placed at the head end of the grave space.

Small items of memorabilia (such as vases) can be placed immediately in front of the headstone but must not spread over the length of the grave. The remainder of the grave space is grassed over.

Muslim baby sections are laid out in the same way as described for the baby sections above. Existing sections are on grassed areas, but new sections are topped with a layer of gravel.

Cremated remains sections

These sections contain small graves which can hold up to four sets of cremated remains. Memorials of a set size can be placed at the head end of the grave space and small items of memorabilia (such as vases) can be placed immediately in front of the headstone. The remainder of the grave is grassed over.

Garden of remembrance

There is a garden of remembrance at Bloxwich, Ryecroft, and Streetly cemeteries. They are grass-covered communal areas, where large numbers of cremated remains are scattered, and therefore no memorialisation is permitted. There are designated areas where families and visitors can leave fresh cut flowers and/or festive tributes.

All scatterings must be arranged with Walsall Council.
