Accessibility statement for Holiday activities and food programme (HAF)

Walsall Council is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is run by Walsall Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to: 

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • some forms and field inputs are not labelled correctly for screen reader users 
  • some lists are not labelled correctly for screen reader users 
  • some headings are not in a chronological order 
  • some parts of content are not displayed in a logical order 
  • links incorrectly labelled will cause issues for all users, but especially the visually impaired  
  • some parts of our website lack proper labelling for sensory characteristics 
  • low colour contrast against the background will cause issues for the visually impaired 
  • keyboard focus elements not being clear for users with vision and cognitive impairments 
  • some error messages do not assist the user to fix the errors

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons. 

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations 

Some parts of the forms do not have values or labels This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non text content). We plan to amend the forms, buttons and frames by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our forms, buttons and frames meets accessibility standards. 

Some heading levels have been skipped and marked up incorrectly. Some parts of the forms including hierarchy, field requirements,  lists structure, elements locations, formatting and ARIA roles are not marked up correctly This may impact Blind or low vision users. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.3.1 Info and Relationships. We plan to amend the headings by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of headings meets accessibility standards. 

Some parts of the content in a not in a logical order. This arrangement renders the content order non-meaningful. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.3.2 Meaningful sequence. We plan to amend the content by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our sequence of content meets accessibility standards.

On some pages instructions rely on sensory characteristics. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.3.3 Sensory Characteristics. We plan to amend the instructions by July  2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of sensory instructions meets accessibility standards. 

Some form field inputs do not have an auto-complete feature. This makes it harder for users to fill out the field, especially for users with cognitive disabilities. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 (Identify Input Purpose). We plan to amend the forms field inputs by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of form field inputs meets accessibility standards. 

Some parts of the website do not have sufficient contrast. Between the text and background colours. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 (contrast (minimum)). We plan to amend the colour contrast by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of colour meets accessibility standards.    Some of the keyboard focus may not be clearly visible. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.4.11 Focus Appearance. We plan to amend the keyboard appearance by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of focus appearance meet accessibility standards)    On some pages the tabbing order is not logical when navigating with a keyboard. This fails WCAG success criteria 2.4.3 ( Focus Order) We plan to amend the tabbing order by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of navigation meets accessibility standards 

Some links are written out of context. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We plan to amend the links by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of links meets accessibility standards.    Some page labels do not describe the topic or purpose of the label. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 2.4.6 Headings and Labels. We plan to amend the labels by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of labels meets accessibility standards.    If an input error is automatically detected, suggestions for correction may not be presented to the user in text. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 3.3.3 (error suggestion) We plan to amend the error messages by July 2024. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of error messages meets accessibility standards. 

Preparation of this accessibility statement 

This statement was prepared on 17 January 2024.

This website was last tested on 01 September 2023. The test was carried out by Walsall Council Accessibility Team. The tests included: 

  • accessibility testing using automated tools such as WAVE and axe DevTools
  • visual inspection of interactive elements
  • interacting with the website using only a keyboard
  • interacting with the website using a screen reader NVDA
  • zoom in pages to 200% and 400% and inspecting the pages
  • simulating mobile phone screens
  • It was last reviewed on 27 February 2024.
