Introduction
Welcome to Walsall Council's guide on Attendance Allowance. Could you be entitled to extra support?
You may be eligible for a benefit called Attendance Allowance. We can provide support to help you make a claim.
Attendance Allowance is a benefit for people over State Pension age who have a disability or health condition that means they need help with personal care or supervision to stay safe.
You do not need to have a carer or be receiving care to qualify.
It can help with extra costs if you have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability that affects your daily life.
It’s tax-free and will not reduce any other benefits you receive. In fact, it could increase them.
Eligibility
You can apply for Attendance Allowance if:
- You are over State Pension age.
- You have a physical or mental disability (including sensory impairments).
- You need help with personal care (like washing, dressing, or eating) or require supervision to keep you safe.
- And you’ve needed this help for at least 6 months, unless you’re terminally ill.
Apply online at www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance/how-to-claim or call the Attendance Allowance helpline on 0800 731 0122.

Many pensioners unknowingly miss out on Pension Credit, a benefit designed to help with expenses. You may be eligible for Pension Credit and could be entitled to over £300 per week.
What is Pension Credit? Pension Credit is a benefit that gives people extra money to help with their living costs if they are over state pension age and on a low income. It can also help with housing costs, energy bills and more. Pension Credit is separate from the state pension and it isn't given automatically—people have to claim it. Eligibility criteria applies.
Other benefits
You may not be eligible for the full amount. However, even if you receive as little as £10 per week you could then be eligible for Council Tax reduction, help towards energy bills, housing costs, NHS costs and heating costs. You could also be eligible for a free TV licence, if you're over 75.
Eligibility
You are eligible for Pension Credit if you are a pensioner on a low income or no income at all. You could still be eligible even if you own your own home or you have money in savings. Even if you don't think you are eligible, it's worth checking.
You can use our free and confidential Benefits Calculator to check if you are entitled to Pension Credit. Answer 30 questions and you will be shown how much Pension Credit you could get. It will also show you other benefits you are entitled to. Select the Benefits Calculator link to get started.
