Funding to adapt your home if you have a disability

A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) can fund changes to your home if you have a disability.

GOV.UK provide information about Disabled Facilities Grants, including:

  • what grants can be used for
  • eligibility
  • how you'll be paid

Ongoing ownership and maintenance

If your works are approved and completed using a DFG, the works and equipment are your legal property and responsibility. You will need to maintain them yourself.

Reusing lifts and hoists

We sometimes get questions about whether we can reuse lifts and hoists to help another disabled person.

Straight and curved stair lifts and hoists

If you no longer need your stair lift or hoist, you or a family member can contact the lift installers to see if they are able to reuse it. Reused parts can help reduce the cost of new DFGs and can also help with the lower costs for rental for palliative equipment.

The lift company are responsible for deciding whether to reuse a lift or hoist. They will consider the age, condition and safety of the equipment. The lift company may help fund the cost of removal, but this is always their decision. We do not have any funds to help with removal of stair lifts or hoists.

Vertical lifts

We can help arrange and pay for the removal of vertical (through floor) lifts. If you have a vertical lift that you no longer need, please contact us.

Walsall Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

The Walsall joint strategic needs assessment (JSNA) has a chapter on housing, which includes information about DFGs.
