Walsall residents encouraged to access food support this World Food Day

Published on

Walsall residents are being encouraged to explore the wide range of local support available to help access healthy, affordable food this World Food Day (Friday 16 October).

The international awareness day shines a spotlight on food security and access to healthy food. In Walsall, it provides an opportunity to highlight the services, schemes, policies and initiatives already helping residents make food budgets go further.

It comes as partners continue to deliver Walsall's Food Plan, building on the recent announcement that Walsall will receive £222,000 through the Government's Good Food Neighbourhoods programme.

The investment recognises the progress already being made through the Walsall Food Partnership, with organisations working together to improve access to affordable food, support healthier eating and connect residents with help in their local communities.

“ Good nutrition plays an important role in supporting people's health and wellbeing at every stage of life. That's why it's important that residents know about the range of support available across Walsall to help them access healthy and affordable food.

From Healthy Start and free school meals to community food initiatives and local support services, there are a variety of options available for those who may need extra help. World Food Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of these services and I encourage residents to find out what support is available in their local community. “

Nadia Inglis, Director of Public Health
Walsall Council

“ World Food Day is an important reminder that everyone should have access to healthy, affordable food. Across Walsall, we are working together through the Walsall Food Partnership to make this a reality. Whether it's community shops, food growing projects, affordable food initiatives or support with the cost of living, there is help available locally. We would encourage anyone who may be struggling, or who wants to find out more about the support on offer, to explore what's available where they live. “

Adam Carter
Chair of Walsall Food Partnership

The support comes at a time when many households continue to feel pressure from rising living costs, with access to affordable, nutritious food remaining a key factor in maintaining good physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Residents can access a range of support to help improve access to healthy and affordable food, including community shops that offer everyday groceries and household essentials at a lower price, with eight shops operating across the borough.

Community initiatives including The Motivation Hub fruit and vegetable stall (in partnership with FareShare) and FoodCycle Walsall provide opportunities to access affordable food, enjoy healthy meals and connect with others in the local community.

Families may be eligible for schemes such as Healthy Start and Free School Meals, helping to reduce the cost of everyday essentials and ensure children have access to nutritious meals.

Community growing projects also provide opportunities for residents to learn new skills, improve their wellbeing and access locally grown food. Residents can find out more about allotments on the Walsall Council website.

For residents experiencing financial hardship, emergency support is also available through local food banks and the Crisis and Resilience Fund.
