What is the Kickstart Scheme?

The Kickstart Scheme is a new programme launched by the government that offers paid placements with an employer of your choice for a Six month period.

How long do I have to work?

These placements are for a minimum of 25 hours a week work and will last a minimum of Six months. However, there are some employers that do offer more hours – please see each placement description for more details.

How much do I get paid?

The salary for a Kickstart placement is at the national minimum wage for your age, currently at the per hour rates below. Rates may change in April 2022;

 

23 to 24

21 to 22

18 to 20

16 to 17

From April 2021

Can anyone apply for a Kickstart placement?

No, you must be between the ages of 16 and 24 (you must start your placement before your 24th birthday) and you must be currently claiming Universal Credit*

*Exceptions apply, please contact your Work Coach or local Job Centre for more details and to check eligibility

How do you apply for a Kickstart placement?

Contact your Work Coach through your Universal Credit Journal and tell them you are interested in the Kickstart placement scheme. They will make an appointment to speak with you and discuss all of the placements that you can apply for.


Employers

The Kickstart Scheme is a new programme launched by the government to deliver funding for employers offering new job roles for 16-24 years olds who are currently in receipt of Universal Credit. The programme is aimed at preventing young people who are currently unemployed facing long term unemployment.

If you are interested in taking on a Kickstart placement and offering a young person the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience of work for 26 weeks, then you can claim;

  • 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25* hours a week.

*You can offer more hours, the scheme will only cover the first 25hrs.

  • Associated employer National Insurance contributions.
  • Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.
