Apply to move to a different school

Overview

You may need to move your child to a different school during the school year. This is called a mid-year admission or transfer.

If your child is in a current reception to year 11 year group, you can apply for a place at any Walsall school during the school year.

You should contact the relevant local authority if you want to apply to a school outside Walsall.

Before you begin

Schools use admissions criteria to decide if they will accept new children. You should check first to see if your child is eligible.

If you’re applying for more than one child to change school, you'll need to complete a separate application for each child.

You can apply to up to nine schools. Make sure you know which schools you want to apply to and list them in priority order. If you’re not sure, visit our find a school page.

To find out more information, the schemes for co-ordinated admissions document tells you about:

  • when key decisions are made
  • evidence for late applications
  • what to do if you live near a borough boundary and want to apply for a school in another authority
  • which schools are their own admissions authority

The determined admission arrangements document tells you about:

  • class sizes
  • oversubscription criteria
  • priority applications from siblings
  • paired infant and junior schools

When to apply

You can submit a mid-year application between September 2020 and July 2021. The online portal is open every day from 8am to 9.30pm.

Mid-year applications take a least seven days to process. At busy times it will take longer.

If you receive an offer that you're not happy with, you can appeal against the decision.
