Have your say on proposals to introduce additional licensing for HMOs in Walsall

Statutory consultation on proposals to introduce additional licensing for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) starts today. The scheme aims to improve conditions and management of HMOs in specific parts of the borough (Paddock, Palfrey, Pleck and St Matthew’s Wards) where there are high numbers of HMOs. If approved, the scheme would require private landlords to apply for a licence for each HMO they let out in these areas. To get a licence certain conditions must be met and a licence fee applies.

Speaking about the proposal, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council Councillor Adrian Andrew said:

“It is vital that all tenants can enjoy living in properties that are decent and well maintained and we know that a huge majority of landlords uphold these responsibilities to tenants and to local communities. Those who don’t care about tenants and communities will feel the force of Walsall Council. I would encourage anyone with an interest to take part in the consultation that should result in stronger powers for us to tackle rogue landlords.”

Before any decisions are made, tenants, residents and landlords are invited to have their say by completing the short questionnaire.

The closing date for responses is 6 June 2021.
