Walsall Mayor hosts reception for Olympian, Ben Whittaker

Darlaston’s Olympic star, Ben Whittaker, will be the toast of the town on Saturday 21 August, when the Mayor of Walsall hosts a reception to honour Ben, who has made the borough proud.

Following Ben’s success in winning a silver medal in a tightly fought light-heavyweight final, in Tokyo, the Mayor was eager to personally congratulate Ben for his achievements and to give the local people of Darlaston a chance to show their appreciation.  Ben attended two local primary schools, Kings Hill and Old Church, and his secondary school was St. Thomas More.  Ben grew up learning to cope with ADHD, but has never allowed this diagnosis to hinder his ambitions.

Ben will travel from Darlaston Town Hall at 11.00 am in a vintage car for a tour of the town, followed afterwards at Darlaston Town Hall, when Ben will pause to attend a private reception of tea and cakes, hosted by the Mayor, with Ben’s family and friends.

The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Rose Burley, said “It is indeed an honour to celebrate Ben’s achievement in Tokyo and to do so in Darlaston his home town. His determination and dedication is proof that believing in one’s own ability is definitely the only way to success.  Well done Ben, keep believing.”

Sharon Felton from Darlaston All Active said “We at Darlaston Town Hall are honoured to host our Olympians homecoming. Ben is a pillar of the community and what he has achieved is outstanding. He is an inspiration to all especially the young people of our local area. They will look up to him and it will give them the inspiration to achieve themselves. If you believe it, you can achieve it .”

The Mayor hopes that residents, shoppers, visitors and workers will all line the streets to give Ben the hero’s welcome he so richly deserves. A map of the route is available.
