Three new ‘Dance to Health’ classes for over 50s coming to Walsall

Three new ‘Dance to Health’ classes for over 50s coming to Walsall
Published on 26 July 2022 Print

Three new, free dance classes for the over 50s are coming to Walsall from the 27 July 2022.

Dance to Health is a dance programme created and delivered by Aesop Arts and Society. It provides a fun, sociable way for people aged 50 and over to incorporate physical activity, in particular strength and balance training into their daily life.

The classes are delivered by dance artists with a background in community dance. All dance artists have received Postural Stability Instructor (PSI) training, the same training that NHS physios receive to prevent falls amongst older people, as well as further training on how to incorporate PSI into the fun, creative medium of dance.

Classes are delivered either in person or online, weekly, for 26 weeks to improve strength and balance sufficiently to prevent falls. Dance to Health has been evaluated by Sheffield Hallam University, who concluded that it reduces falls by 58% and offers the health system an effective means to prevent older people from falling.

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said:

“The Dance to Health classes have proven to be a popular and successful way for the over 50s in Walsall to increase their physical activity and reduce their risk of falling. I am delighted that three new classes are being introduced as it means we can welcome even more people and help them to improve their physical wellbeing.”

Ben Worth, Head of Business Development and Marketing at Aesop Arts and Society said:

“Our dance classes help people to increase their fitness, strength and balance so they can continue to do the things they enjoy. The classes are fun, vibrant and sociable. There is an opportunity to get to know one another after the class over a cup of tea or coffee. No previous experience is needed, everybody over fifty is welcome!”

The new classes will run every Wednesday for 26 weeks from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, starting on the 27 July. They will take place at Frank F Harrison Community Association, Willenhall CHART and Friar Park Millennium Centre and are free to attend.
