Walsall Council’s ‘tips’ gear up to be open seven days a week

From Saturday 1 August the HWRCs at Merchants Way, Aldridge, and Fryers Road, Bloxwich, will be open seven days a week with an enhanced service.

When the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) partially reopened in May, the range of materials accepted for recycling and disposal had to be reduced to allow social distancing and because the disposal outlets many materials usually accepted were not operating due to COVID-19.

The phased easing of lockdown and government guidance reducing the two metre social distancing rule to one metre plus from 4 July 2020 allowed a review of the current arrangements at the sites. As the HWRC sites are outdoor facilities, they are considered less of a risk than enclosed areas. Visitors to the sites from Saturday 1 August will see that barriers and fencing have been removed. This allows additional vehicle parking bays and, with controls in place, once out of their vehicles, people will be allowed to move around the sites again via pedestrian walkways to segregate their recycling and waste in different skips and containers.

Councillor Oliver Butler, Portfolio Holder for Clean and Green said:

“I know that many keen recyclers have been waiting for this day, so that they can dispose of recyclable waste they have been patiently storing at home in an environmentally friendly way. And of course those who have been busying themselves with renovation projects in their homes and gardens during lockdown and had to stockpile wastes which we were unable to accept at first will also be really pleased."

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback about the live web-cams feeds at both HWRCs and intend to keep them so you can ‘view the queue’ and plan your trips to the tip.”

“There is never an excuse for fly-tipping; it is a criminal offence which carries severe penalties including an unlimited fine and up to five years in jail. Our tips are free of use for all residents of Walsall to dispose of their household waste and accept commonly fly-tipped items such as mattresses and fridges. Walsall Council operates a value for money service to collect bulky items such as this from your doorstep; for just £10 we will collect three bulky items and you can be reassured they’ll be disposed of legally.”

“I’m pleased that we are now able to fully open our tips in a safe, deliverable and operationally robust way, but this will be a ‘new’ normal. The pandemic hasn’t gone away and we are all responsible for our own safety and that of others. As there will be more pedestrian movement within these sites once people have left their vehicles, we strongly advise visitors to stay alert, wash or sanitise their hands before and after and to wear face coverings in consideration of other site users.”

Large vans and trailers will not be accepted under the revised operating arrangements due to the amounts of waste they can carry and the increased unloading times when the sites may already be under pressure.

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are welcomed on site. While they are larger vehicles, we do understand that they may well be the sole family vehicle and that these families may have additional needs.

Fryers Road will initially be one way Monday to Friday to ensure ‘tipping off’ of domestic refuse, recycling collections and street cleansing vehicles is not disrupted. Entry to Fryers Road will be via Willenhall Lane. There will be no entry from Leamore Lane. Local businesses have been advised in writing so that they are able to prepare.
