Council revokes licence for ‘News and Booze’ on Ablewell Street

Walsall Council has revoked a Town trader’s alcohol licence for selling illicit counterfeit cigarettes on four separate occasions between 2019 and 2020, despite previous warnings and interventions from Walsall Trading Standards and local police.  At a recent Walsall Council Licensing and Safety Committee review on 03 February 2021, it was decided that Shamim Khan the proprietor of ‘News and Booze’, Ablewell Street Walsall had “exhibited a flagrant disregard of his responsibilities as a premises licence holder.”

Volunteers and residents support variant testing in Walsall

Over the past week, you may have seen Walsall Council staff, community partners and trained volunteers visiting targeted areas of the borough to provide free testing for the COVID-19 South African variant. This door-to-door work and the take up of mobile testing in a small area of Walsall, is very important in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. Surge testing is an important step in containing this new, more transmissible variant and take pressure off the NHS and help keep the borough safe. Thank you for your continued support and getting behind this rapid testing programme.

Adverse ground conditions at Streetly Cemetery

The council is aware of adverse ground conditions around the Islamic burial area at Streetly Cemetery. The expansion of the burials area combined with very wet weather has resulted in muddy conditions. The council will be landscaping the area as soon as the weather and ground conditions allow. In the meantime, temporary measures are being considered.
