Walsall Council has taken essential measures to ensure that waste collection (grey and green bins) from households in the borough remains a priority during the current Coronavirus situation.  Garden waste collections were due to begin in early April but have been postponed to allow staff and service vehicles to support household waste collections across the borough.

Portfolio Holder for Clean and Green Services, Councillor Oliver Butler announced during the cabinet meeting last night that garden waste collections will be postponed.

Councillor Butler said:

“These are unprecedented times and making sure that our frontline services continue as best they can is our priority.  Transferring our available staff and resources into household waste collections is the right thing to do for our residents.  We want people to feel confident that their bins will be collected during this difficult period.”

“We appreciate that households will still need to dispose of their garden waste and recommend that they take it to a local tip.  Walsall’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres are open seven days per week and accept residential garden waste.  There are also other solutions, such as home composting, if people are finding it difficult to dispose of their garden waste.”

“We’d like to ask people for their patience in these challenging times and appreciate their support whilst we prioritise providing an efficient waste collection service.”

The garden waste collection service will be reviewed later in the year to determine if there is operational capacity to begin collections.

Notes to Editor

The free garden waste collection service was due to begin in Walsall on Monday 6 April, offering fortnightly collections for a period of 34 weeks.

Walsall’s two HWRCs in Bloxwich and Aldridge are currently open seven days per week and will move to summer opening hours on 1 April.  Each site has a late night opening on one day per week.  Residents are advised to try to visit the sites at quieter times such as week days, when the sites open up or later in the day – details are on Walsall Council’s website http://bit.ly/WalsallHWRC
