New dance classes for people over 50 living in Walsall

Dance to Health is a new free weekly class for Walsall residents to build strength, improve balance and confidence, and reduce the risk of falls.

Delivered by fully trained dance artists, the classes combine strength and balance exercises with the fun and creativity of dance.

The virtual classes, starting at 2pm every Monday from 25 October last between 60 and 90 minutes and can be done safely from your home.

The sessions start with some simple seated or standing warm-ups and build up to short routines. There are lots of musical and dance styles that are catered to and no previous dance experience is required! The final 30 minutes offers an opportunity to socialise with other attendees.

Councillor Stephen Craddock, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing, said: 

“I am really pleased that Walsall residents now have an opportunity to join the Dance to Health programme. It is funded by the council and free to anyone who lives or works in Walsall aged 50 or over. 

“There are plenty of reasons to get moving to music, benefitting both your mental and physical health. Dancing is a fantastic way to get fit and have fun at the same time and doing it regularly will help maintain strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing your balance and co-ordination.

“I know for some people they would prefer to meet up with others to share the joy of dancing and with the opportunity to socialise afterwards. Further details about this offer will be available shortly, so keep an eye out as we will be running some face-to-face sessions soon.”

  • Dance to Health has been funded by Walsall Council Public Health for people aged 50 and over, providing a fun and sociable way to incorporate physical activity and in particular strength and balance training into their daily life, helping to reduce the risk of falls as well as other chronic illness.
  • Dance to Health has been evaluated by Sheffield Hallam University. They concluded it reduces falls by 58% and offers the health system an effective and cost effective means to prevent older people from falling.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic each class is currently online and delivered through Zoom. To join, you need a WiFi enabled device such as a laptop or tablet. A link will be sent for residents to join in advance of the session.
