Walsall was once known as the Town of One Hundred Trades.  From Aldridge to Willenhall, Darlaston to Streetly and everywhere in between, our Borough has been a centre of manufacturing excellence for centuries.

Our exhibition celebrates the craftsmanship, innovation and skill of local people historically and up to the present day.

I Remember Walsall Illuminations

19 October – 31 December

This exhibition marks the 70th anniversary of the first annual Walsall Illuminations, which ran for a week in September 1951 as part of the town’s celebrations for the Festival of Britain.

The exhibition features photographs and videos which show how the event changed over the 57 years it ran in Walsall Arboretum, from buying in old Blackpool Illuminations features to using new lighting technologies such as lasers. It also includes memories and images of some people who visited or worked at the Illuminations.

Please come along to reminisce and share your memories of this great event, which was popular with so many Midlands families for nearly sixty years.

This project is supported by Creative Black Country as part of Arts Council England’s Creative People and Places scheme.

Talks

Timber Framed Buildings – the Original Prefabs, an illustrated talk by Ian Bott

Saturday 26 February, 2.30pm

Discover crucks, tie beams and king posts while you indulge in the dreamy rustic architecture of our timber framed cottages, manors and barns.  They enjoyed their picturesque zenith during the Tudor dynasty of ‘Merrie Old England’, until superseded by the then newly fashionable house brick.

While many examples are to be found in our country towns and villages, you may be surprised to learn of some of the rare survivors hidden amongst the urban sprawl of our own local West Midlands district.

£3.50 (includes tea and cake).

Booking and pre-payment essential.
