Sister Suffragette - Exhibition

17 February - 15 April 2018

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave some women the right to vote.  Ten years later, women were finally granted equal voting rights with men.
To commemorate these landmark events, we have raided our collections to find items that reflect the strength, resilience and determination of women in the quest for equality.  The display draws on the social history of women’s work from domestic drudgery to emancipation.  With the gradual acceptance of women in the workplace during the First World War and the enormous efforts of activists such as the Co-Operative Women’s Guild and the Suffragettes, women won the vote.
