Walsall Council is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of highway structures in the borough. Highway structures include subways, culverts, retaining walls and 110 road bridges. Other bridge owners in the Borough include Network Rail, Highways England and the Canal and River Trust.
The overall condition of the council owned bridge stock is good, with detailed principal bridge inspections being undertaken every six years and general inspections every two years. Other inspections are carried out as and when necessary, such as following damage resulting from accidental vehicular impact.
We organise routine maintenance to ensure that our highway structures remain in a safe condition for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. This includes painting, repointing of brickwork, re-waterproofing, replacing bridge bearings and removing vegetation.
