We are responsible for placing the children in our care and always try to place them with our own foster carers. This means that as Walsall foster carers you are more likely to have regular placements with children in the age ranges you are skilled to work with.
We have recently revised the fees and allowances paid to foster carers. You can expect to be paid between £200 to £600 per week for caring for children for Walsall Council, dependent on how many children you care for and your skills and expertise. We now operate a ‘fee per bed’ system which means that you will be paid this fee when you have a child or young person placed with you. In addition to the fee you will receive an age-related allowance paid for each child in your care to cover items such as clothes, toiletries, outings, pocket money, savings. Allowances range from £135.00 to £215.00 per child per week. We pay an additional allowance at birthdays and festival times. You can also claim fostering related mileage and expenses.
We are based in the heart of Walsall. This means that your supervising social worker, training courses, meetings and social events are local to you and on hand whenever you need them.
We have a fantastic support network for you. Your supervising social worker is local to you and easily reached, we have an ‘out of hours’ team too, so you have 24 hour support. We also work with many different professional teams to help with the children in your care. You will have access to CAMHS, health services, educational professionals to name but a few.
We have a Foster Carers Association, run by experienced foster carers, who can offer a 24 hour telephone helpline, buddying for new carers, advice with training portfolios, support with SGO and adoption and also arrange social outings throughout the year for the whole fostering family.
We offer a wide and varied training programme to help build your skills and confidence as foster carers. This can range from Induction Workshops, covering many of the essential topics and skills you need to know in your first years as foster carers. There are also more specialist courses such as Paediatric First Aid, Attachment, Sex & Sexuality and Practical Play for Under 5’s etc. In addition to this we also offer the ‘Solihull Approach’ 12 week course. We are also looking forward to offering the ‘Head, Heart & Hands’ social pedagogy training from Fostering Network. Online training is available to fostering households and this covers a wide variety of subjects. Our training courses take place in venues in and around Walsall so will always be local and accessible.
We provide all of our foster carers with membership to national leading charity ‘Fostering Network’ when they become approved as carers for Walsall. Membership to Fostering Network includes access to the charity’s events and conferences, special discounts at leading retailers, access to legal advice & counselling and an ever growing community of fellow foster carers for support.
We offer all of our foster carers a ‘Max Card’, which entitles you to discounts from national retailers and discounted days out and ‘things to do’.
We value all of our foster carers and recognise this with events to celebrate your contribution to our fostering community. We have recently recognised carers long service with visits to the Mayor’s Parlour and there will also be celebratory days to thank our carers.
