On Monday 23 March the prime minister announced steps to further reduce the amount of face to face contact that people have with each other through socialising.
Walsall Council has already closed many of its public facing buildings such as libraries, leisure centres, the New Art Gallery, the Leather Museum and Walsall Arena and Arts Centre. The following closures and restrictions are also in place:
- The Council House will remain open with additional measures in relation to social distancing
- The Town Hall remains closed and all events have been cancelled until further notice
- Our MOT service at the Brownhills Depot is now closed to the public
- The Arboretum Visitor Centre is now closed to the public
- The Civic Centre’s First Stop Shop is now closed to the public. Customers can still access council information and systems using online and telephone services.
MOT testing centre closed
The decision has been made to temporarily close the council's MOT testing centre from today (25 March). All MOT inspections for taxis will cease from today and all tests for public vehicles will end at lunchtime. All customers who have MOT tests booked for today or the coming week have been notified of the closure. This will be reviewed on a weekly basis and we will update customers when we are able to resume inspections.
Walsall borough playgrounds closed
All Walsall borough playgrounds are closed until further notice, all parks and green spaces require people to stay two metres apart from others at all times in accordance with national guidance on social distancing.
Household Waste and Recycling Centres closed
The decision has been taken to close the two Household Waste and Recycling Centres (tips) in Walsall. Both Merchants Way in Aldridge and Fryers Road sites are closed until further notice following the 23 March statement from the Government regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus). Please visit our Clean And Green Services website and social media channels for updates and information, Twitter: @cleangreentweet and Facebook: Walsall Bins and Things.
Collection of garden waste bins postponed
The commencement of garden waste collections (brown bins) has been postponed until later in the year as we review the current COVID-19 situation. We are currently working to maintain an effective waste collection service with grey (general rubbish) and green (recycling) bins. We appreciate your patience in these challenging times and appreciate your support while we prioritise providing an efficient waste collection service.
All markets have now been closed
Walsall Council has taken the decision to close its markets in Walsall Town Centre, Willenhall and Bloxwich to support the government’s attempt to reduce the rate of infection from coronavirus.
Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies
In accordance with government guidelines, no marriage or civil partnership ceremonies can take place until further notice. Our Register Office team have contacted couples who were planning to marry over the next number of weeks to make them aware. If you have not been contacted and if you would like further clarification, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
It is necessary that attendance at funerals in Walsall during the COVID-19 crisis is to be much, much reduced. Although the government has limited all other gatherings to just two people, gatherings at funeral services are slightly different.
We ask that people attending a funeral self-limit to only the immediate family. This means:
- Spouse / Partner
- Parents / Carers
- Brothers / Sisters
- Sons and daughters (and their partners).
Please ask anyone else not to attend. This is for the safety of everyone.
If you or anyone in the above categories fall into the vulnerable group or have underlying health conditions, please prioritise your own safety. We advise that you do not attend the funeral.
We are aiming to reduce the transmission of the coronavirus through self-distancing. If you do attend a funeral, please stand or sit two metres or more away from anyone else.
We do appreciate your understanding at this difficult time.
