Black Country-based company, Hexstone, specialises in industrial fasteners. Their Bilston site was due to close and the company needed help to support the employees who were going to be affected.
Some staff were being relocated to another site within the group, but others were being made redundant. Hextone heard about the Skills Support for the Redundancy programme (SSR) through the Department for Work and Pensions.
How SSR helped
Hextone were introduced to CPC Training Consultants, one of Serco’s network of expert training providers, who completed a training needs analysis with Hexstone to identify the best support for their needs.
The objective was to support the staff with obtaining the necessary skills and knowledge to help them to gain sustainable employment after leaving Hexstone. The staff were offered training courses which would give them the opportunity to update their skills and achieve a certificate to back up their industry experience.
All staff affected were offered the opportunity to take up training through SSR. 15 employees were enrolled onto Warehousing and Storage training, and 6 of those also undertook training in Digital Skills.
The lockdown, self-isolating and furloughing has all had an impact, but the company are pleased that the training has managed to continue in some form or another despite these barriers.
As the programme is co-financed by the Education & Skills Funding Agency and European Social Fund, the staff were able to access the training at no cost to themselves or Hexstone.
So far, all 15 individuals have achieved a Level 2 certificate in Warehousing and Storage, and some of the staff are also working towards achieving a Level 2 certificate in Digital Skills.
The SSR programme enabled the company to support their staff through a difficult time.
