The Building Better Opportunities programme, funded by the European Social Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund, are co-investing in local projects tackling the root causes of worklessness, promoting social inclusion and driving local jobs and growth.

Black Country Click Start is one of four projects within the Building Better Opportunities programme across the Black Country and will help people across Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley & Sandwell move into or closer to the labour market by developing their financial and digital skills. All 4 BBO project across the Black Country will run until September 2022.

The Black Country Click Start project is jointly led by whg and GreenSquareAccord in partnership across the Black Country.

"Theresa is a stay at home mum with a large family and when the schools closed and learning moved online, she was struggling. She had no digital skills and couldn’t use a computer.

Through one of her friends, she heard about the Click Start programme that was being run by her housing provider, whg. Her friend had already completed the programme and knew that it could help Theresa as well.

Digital Coach Lisa started working with Theresa remotely and was able to tailor the 1-1 sessions to Theresa’s exact needs – and that started back at basics of using a mouse and how to navigate a computer.

Education and training had been a struggle for Theresa in the past and she was adamant that she wouldn’t be able to complete the programme. She knew she had to do all she could to bring herself into the digital world as home schooling her children was becoming impossible and adding to her anxiety and self-doubt.

Lisa guided Theresa through the sessions at her own pace and quickly Theresa started to relax and her confidence started to build. Lisa helped Theresa open an email account and showed her how to manage the account, including how to spot scam and spam emails and adding attachments.

Theresa now felt she was at the stage where she could download the necessary home schooling apps and started creating her own documents and practising in her own time. Lisa spent time making sure Theresa understood how she could keep her children safe online and how to adjust settings on the computer to restrict their time usage and what information they could access.

With debt worries that added to her anxiety, Theresa was keen to look at ways of saving money. Lisa showed her a wide range of sites that she could use for price comparison and tips on how to spot the best deals, taking into consideration any hidden fees.


Getting online has made Theresa a different person, she is saving money, shopping online and is now looking into college courses for when her children are all in full-time education. What an amazing result."
