Volunteering at Walsall Archives

Volunteering with us offers a chance to safeguard our collective heritage for future generations. It’s a unique and rewarding experience that allows you to connect with history in a hands-on way and develop your skills. 

We work with community organisations running their own heritage projects. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering for a heritage project with a local community group.

We have the following opportunities to get involved:

Family History Volunteer
Role purpose

To support customers with family history enquiries.  

To provide tutorials, on a one-to-one basis, and help with family history resources such as Ancestry and Find My Past.

Details

Duties will involve helping customers with family history enquiries and providing basic tuition using the Ancestry and Find My Past website. 

Good customer care is required. Experience of teaching/instructing is desirable, but training and help will be provided.

Archives Volunteer
OverviewAs an Archives volunteer, you will gain valuable experience working with a variety of public records and historical documents. You will increase your confidence and learn new skills working closely with the archives team.
Role and PurposeTo support the archives team in improving the accessibility and searchability of archived records and documents. You will be tasked with listing and indexing uncatalogued material from the archives.
DetailsVolunteers should have an interest in history and enjoy research. Much of the role involves reading documents in close detail and noting significant items or events, so an accurate, methodical approach to the task is essential.
Skills RequiredInterest in Local History, methodical approach, good reading and writing skills.
Responsible toSenior member of Archives staff on duty
Training availableA full induction is provided along with ongoing support to complete the tasks.
