School food catering service

Walsall Council Catering Service is a Food for Life bronze award winner. We provide meals for around a third of the primary and special schools across the borough.

Food is freshly prepared every day, and complies with the Government’s food and nutrition standards

Food at primary and special schools

We use RSPCA Freedom Food free range eggs, Marine Stewardship Council approved sustainable fish and Red Tractor approved fresh meat.

School meals are on a three week cycle, and include roast dinners, pasta and curries, plus desserts. We encourage children to get involved with planning and preparing food on certain days.

Sandwiches and jacket potatoes, as well as fruit, salad, cheese and biscuits, yoghurt and fresh drinking water are all available every day. There is always a vegetarian option.

As well as primary schools, we cater for Elmwood Community Special School, New Leaf Inclusion Centre, and Shepwell School. We adapt the same menu to the needs and dietary requirements (such as soft food) of pupils.

Primary school menu

Monday

  • Main meals: meat balls in tomato sauce, vegetarian meat balls (v), jacket potato and filing (v)
  • Sides: pasta**, herbie diced potatoes, carrots and peas
  • Dessert: sugar ring doughnut

Tuesday

  • Main meals: Chicken curry, Quorn curry (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Sides: Rice** and naan bread, jacket wedges, carrots
  • Dessert: Fruit sponge and custard*

Wednesday

  • Main meals: Cheese and ham pizza, cheese and tomato pizza (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Sides: Herbie diced potatoes, baked beans
  • Dessert: Rice pudding and fruit slice*

Thursday

  • Main meals: Roast of the day, Quorn roast (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Sides: Creamed and roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli, gravy
  • Dessert: Fresh fruit salad and ice cream*

Friday

  • Main meals: Oven baked fish (cook’s choice), salmon fish fingers*** (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Side: Chips and peas
  • Dessert: Sticky chocolate pudding and custard

  • Dessert: Flap jack and fruit slice custard*

Wednesday

  • Main meals: Lasagne, Quorn lasagne (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Sides: Herbie diced potatoes, garlic bread, carrots
  • Dessert: Iced lemon sponge and custard

Thursday

  • Main meals: Roast chicken fillet and stuffing, Quorn fillet and stuffing (v), jacket potato and filling (v)
  • Sides: Creamed and roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli, gravy
  • Dessert: Fresh fruit salad and ice cream*

Friday

  • Dessert: Chocolate cracknell and custard

Allergens

We can provide details of food allergens on request. We are able to cater for medically diagnosed food allergies and intolerances by working with your child’s dietitian. 

We do not use nuts, including peanuts, in our menus. Some of our menu items contain allergens, including:
