Community shops

A community shop is a place where you can buy food and everyday items at lower prices. These shops don’t make a profit, which means the money saved goes back to help you.

How it works

Anyone can use a community shop. Each one has its own membership fee - usually around £2 or £3 each year.

Someone will help you to register when you first visit the shop. They’ll ask a few questions, such as your name, address and the number of people you live with. If you don’t have a permanent address, you can still register.

Once you’re a member, you’ll be able to buy things from the shop. If you want to use another shop, you’ll need to join there and pay the fee.

We hope to see more community cookery programmes launch soon. We'll update you when they're available.

What you can buy

Each community shop sells things that local people need. They might not all sell the same things, but in general you’ll find:

  • food
  • toiletries (like soap and toothpaste)
  • pet supplies
  • cleaning products

Sometimes there are limits on how much you can buy. This helps make sure there’s enough for everyone.

How you can support a community shop
