Walsall Christmas Lights Switch-On & Festive Markets
Saturday 29 November, 11am-8pm. Walsall town centre. Free entry.
This November, Walsall town centre will sparkle with festive cheer at the first ever Christmas Lights Switch-On and Festive Markets! Enjoy a magical day filled with festive fun, live performances, Christmas makers markets and Illuminate - a spectacular projection display ahead of the big switch-on.
Delivered by Walsall Council in partnership with Walsall MakerFest, Urban Hax, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall Leather Museum and AR Demolition Ltd.

Flying Bat Crafts
Tuesday 28 October – Sunday 2 November
Free, drop-in during Gallery opening hours. Suitable for all ages.
Make a bat with moving wings using paper, straws & string.
Sunday Art Club
Sundays, 12-3pm. Age 4+. Free, drop-in.
The Gallery’s weekly art club for children and young people. Meet artists and creatives and learn to paint, print, sculpt, craft and more!
- Sunday 2 November: Day of the Dead Masks – Collage with colourful felt, craft foam & crepe paper.
- Sunday 9 November: Make a Market Stall – Decorate our child-sized market stalls & craft plasticine bowls of foods from your culture.
- Sunday 16 November: Junk Astronauts – Model a spaceman using bottles, scrap card & foil.
- Sunday 23 November: Experimental Portraits – Learn to draw portraits in the style of Frank Auerbach using pencils & fine line pens.
- Sunday 30 November: Tin Foil Garlands – Cover cardboard stars in foil and string up at home for a unique, shiny, festive decoration.
Crochet starter session – Stitchety Workshops with artist Kate Tilley
Wednesday 5 November, 10am-12pm. £5 / £4.50 concs.
Learn techniques in sewing, knitting, crochet and embroidery in this new, informal, monthly workshop for adults. The first of six workshops running on the first Wednesday of every month.
Preview – Studio Prints: Celebrating the Balakjian Collection
Thursday 6 November, 6-8pm. Free, drop-in. All welcome.
Exhibition preview of a major exhibition featuring artworks by Frank Auerbach, Marc Balakjian, Stephen Conroy, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Celia Paul and Dorothea Wight acquired for Walsall’s Permanent Collection through the Cultural Gifts Scheme, administered by Arts Council England.
Walk & Draw
Saturday 8 November, 11am-12.30pm. Free. Every second Saturday of the month. Artist Al Fawson leads these fast paced and fun workshops. Make speedy sketches of artworks in the Collections and temporary exhibitions, the Gallery’s architecture, the magnificent views from the Gallery’s windows, and the local area, including the wildlife along the canal, public sculptures and historical buildings along the high street. The focus will vary each month, therefore attendees are welcome to book onto all sessions, but this is not necessary.
Paper cup tea lights workshop
Saturday 8 November, 4-5.30pm. Free. Caldmore Community Garden. WS1 3RH
Join artist Daya Bhatti for a workshop inspired by the Festival of Lights. Create your own unique tea light holders with paper cups, tissue paper, and coloured foils, then light them up with LED lights.
Baby & Me
Wednesday 12 November, 10.30am-12noon & 12.30-2pm.
Suitable for 0-24 months. £3.50 per child, places are limited, booking essential. Book at Reception or call 01922 654400.
Multi-sensory sessions for parents, carers and their babies. Explore colours and light projections, discover new smells, feel new textures in our touchy-feely books and relax in comfy cushions whilst you listen to a short story and meet other new parents.
Christmas Makers’ Market
Saturday 29 November, 11am-3pm. Drop-in, free entry.
Pop along to discover unique and original crafts from local makers and craftspeople. Pick up a Christmas gift, or treat yourself to something special.

Walsall Music Education Service present Once Upon A Christmas

This festive journey begins in September, when passionate teachers from across Walsall come together for a special training session led by the renowned choral director, Ula Weber. With expert guidance, detailed notes, and custom backing tracks in hand, they return to their schools ready to inspire their choirs. Over just 10 short weeks, children learn an exciting repertoire of 11 songs, all performed from memory. This year’s selection brings together the magic of stage and screen, with beloved songs from musicals and movies, alongside traditional Christmas favourites – a perfect blend of nostalgia and sparkle. Once Upon a Christmas is more than a concert it's a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the joy of singing together.
