What’s On Walsall - May 2024

Walsall Arboretum celebrations headlined by all-female Slade tribute, in conversation with the Sex Pistol’s very own Johnny Rotten, and Aled Jones’ Full Circle tour are just some of the events and activities taking place this May at The New Art Gallery, Walsall Leather Museum and Walsall Arena and Arts Centre. 

The Arboretum's 150th anniversary celebrations will take place on Saturday 4 May.

HIGHLIGHT - Walsall Arboretum’s 150th anniversary celebrations

Saturday 4 May 2024, 12 noon to 7pm. 

Free admission.  

A day full of entertainment to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Walsall Arboretum. An array of activities will be on offer, with something for everyone. The event will see the much-loved miniature railway return for the day and there will also be children's rides, food stalls and bars, traditional games and boat rides (payment needed). Hosted by well-known local DJ Dicky Dodd, the day will feature a selection of talented, mainly local, musicians on a main stage and an acoustic stage.

Art Explora Mobile Museum 2024   

Wednesday 8 to Saturday 11 May 2024. 

Free.  

The Mobile Museum, a collaboration with Art Explora, Tate and MuMo, shares a specially curated exhibition Soup, Socks and Spiders! Art of the Everyday, an exploration of still life in art. The exhibition brings together contemporary and historic works of art from the Tate national collection that present everyday objects in unexpected ways. The Mobile Museum presents artworks by artists including Damien Hirst, David Hockney, Cornelia Parker and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Walsall Arboretum User Group annual plant sale   

Woodland Wildlife Garden (situated alongside the path from the Grange Car Park).   

Saturday 11 May 2024, 1.30pm to 4pm.   

A wide range of garden and house plants will be available at the Walsall Arboretum User Group annual plant sale for 2024. The group has been preparing for weeks by germinating seeds, dividing herbaceous plants from the Woodland Garden, their own gardens and badgering friends to do the same. There will be bargains on offer on plants you might never find in garden centres. Cash preferred.

Race For Life (3k and 5k)    

Sunday 12 May 2024, 11am.   

You can take part in any Race for Life event as an individual or a group to raise money for life-saving research. Walk, jog or run together in a group or go solo at your own pace, or lead the way as a Group Leader and get family, friends and colleagues involved. However you choose to get muddy, you’re helping to beat cancer.   

 

Steven Hill Funfair   

Saturday May 18 and Sunday May 19, 11am to 8pm 

Free. 

Walsall Family Fun Days Event At the Arboretum Extension. The day will be filled with entertainment for all ages. This will include a family fun fair featuring new and exciting rides, circus workshops, a walking talking robot, and a Punch and Judy show. At intervals throughout the day, both Transformers and Dinosaur mascots will make appearances.

BSL tour of Pride&Privilege and collaborative hand sculpture workshop  

Saturday 4 May 2024, 2pm to 4.30pm.  

Free.  

Join Alex and Gary, co-directors of Real Arts Workshops, for a BSL tour of the highlights of the Garman Ryan Collection Pride&Privilege Trail (with English interpretation) followed by an interactive workshop, making cardboard hand sculptures.

Your voice matters! What issues do you feel strongly about in your community? What should change or stop? Create a banner using the chunky pens and paper provided.   

  

Workshop exploring period poverty for Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Day 

Saturday 25 May 2024, 12-4pm.  

Free, drop-in.  

Join artist Corinne to discuss their artwork in the Pride&Privilege exhibition and make bracelets in support of menstrual awareness. This workshop will take place simultaneously at the Gallery and online. If you would like to participate online, email ccpwalsall@gmail.com with your address by Thursday 16 May 2024 and materials will be posted to you.

John Lydon

Tickets: £34 Standard, £51 VIP (Meet and greet tickets sold out).  

John Lydon - aka Johnny Rotten - changed the face of music and sparked a cultural revolution.   

In his spoken word show, I Could Be Wrong, I Could Be Right, Lydon is touring the UK. He will talk about how he sees life, along with his unique and extraordinary career, and take audience questions during a pyrotechnic, one-off tour. Lydon will be sharing his thoughts with audiences.

 

The ELO Tribute Show   

Saturday 4 May 2024, 7.30pm.   

Tickets: £28.  

The world’s greatest tribute celebrating the music of Jeff Lynne and ELO bring their stunning show, with a band of amazing musicians including a female string section. This will be a fabulous night of hit after hit from such a vast back catalogue.
