Walsall Public Health issues winter vaccination appeal

As flu cases begin to rise across the region, Walsall Council Public Health is urging everyone who is eligible to come forward for their flu vaccination as soon as possible.
Over 65 per cent of eligible residents across the Black Country are yet to receive their flu vaccine.
With flu infections hitting the NHS over a month earlier than last year, and case numbers already three times higher than the same time in 2024, health leaders are stressing the importance of getting vaccinated now to curb the early wave.
Getting vaccinated remains the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and those you care for from serious illness this winter. With colder weather fast approaching, health leaders are warning that now is the time to act – before viruses begin to circulate more widely.
Anyone aged 65 and over, children and adults with long-term health conditions, pregnant women, carers, all children aged 2-3 years old and people who live with someone with a weakened immune system are all eligible. Frontline health and social care staff should also be vaccinated.
Flu vaccinations are free of charge and available through GP practices, local pharmacies, and mobile vaccination clinics across Walsall to make it easier for people to get protected. For those who prefer a vaccine that does not contain any porcine or egg ingredients, alternative flu vaccines are available. Residents should also check if they are eligible for other winter vaccines.

The most common side effects of the flu vaccine are mild and get better within a day or two. You might notice a little pain or soreness where the injection was given, a slightly raised temperature or an aching body. These are normal signs that your body is building protection. The flu vaccine cannot give you flu. If you have any questions or concerns about the flu vaccine, please speak to your GP, pharmacist or another healthcare professional. “

The mobile vaccination clinic offering the flu vaccine is being hosted at a range of locations in Walsall, with no appointment necessary:
- Thursday 27 November from 10am to 3pm at ASDA Darlaston
- Thursday 4 December from 10am to 3pm at ASDA Darlaston
- Saturday 13 December from 10am to 2pm at the rear car park of Bloxwich Launchpad
- Thursday 18 December from 10am to 3pm outside St Paul’s Church in Walsall town centre
Those eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine can also receive the vaccine at the clinic.
For children in Reception to Year 11 who missed their flu vaccination at school, a catch-up clinic will take place on 29 November 2025 from 09:00 – 13:00 at East Family Hub in Brownhills, Walsall.
Parents and carers should complete and return consent forms for their child(ren) to have the flu vaccination. The easiest way is to complete the online consent form. The form can be completed in different languages. - Alongside flu and COVID-19, eligible residents can also get their Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccination at their local GP practice where they live. This vaccination is available for those aged 75 to 79 or pregnant women over 28 weeks.
- Pneumococcal vaccines are also available for anyone aged 65 and over via GP practices.
- Eligible residents may also be able to receive other vaccines, such as the Shingles vaccine through their GP (for adults aged 65 and over and those aged 18+ with a severely weakened immune system). To find out more, speak to your GP.
