A Walsall councillor has been recognised in the King's birthday honours for 2025 with an MBE for his exceptional work promoting faith and community integration across the West Midlands.
Councillor Ram K. Mehmi, Labour representative for Pleck ward, is one of five people from Walsall to be recognised in this year’s birthday honours. He also serves as a Trustee of Darlaston Temple, where his interfaith work has been useful in building relationships across religious communities.
The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Louise Harrison, paid tribute to Councillor Mehmi on his recognition by His Majesty the King.
“ On behalf of the council and the people of Walsall, I extend our warmest congratulations to Councillor Mehmi on this thoroughly deserved honour. I also want to congratulate all the recipients from Walsall and across the West Midlands who have been recognised in this year's King's Birthday Honours for their exceptional contributions to our communities.
Ram has worked tirelessly to promote understanding and cooperation between different faith communities in our borough. His dedication to fostering integration and community cohesion has made a huge difference to the lives of residents across Walsall, and this MBE is well-deserved! “
Councillor Mehmi was elected to Walsall Council in May 2022, and has served on several council committees including Audit, Licensing and Safety, and Social Care and Health Overview and Scrutiny. He also represents Walsall's interests on the West Midlands Combined Authority’s scrutiny committee.
“ I am deeply humbled and honoured to receive this recognition from His Majesty the King. This award reflects not only my own efforts but the collective work of all those who strive daily to build stronger, more cohesive communities in Walsall and beyond.
I am grateful for the trust my constituents have placed in me, and I remain committed to continuing this vital work of promoting integration, mutual respect, and understanding between people of all faiths and backgrounds. “
Councillor Mehmi is one of 25 people from across the West Midlands to be recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours, including five from Walsall, for their contributions to public service and community life.
The MBE recognises individuals who have made significant contributions at a county level. Councillor Mehmi will receive his honour at an investiture ceremony to be held at Buckingham Palace at a future date.
