Take extra care as amber heat health alert issued for West Midlands
Published on
With high temperatures forecast, Walsall residents are being urged to take extra precautions during the hot weather.
The UK Health Security Agency (in partnership with the Met Office) has issued an amber heat health alert for the West Midlands, in place from 22 June 2026. This means weather impacts are likely to be felt across the health and social care system, with increased risks to vulnerable people.
High temperatures can pose a risk to health, particularly for older adults, young children and individuals with long-term health conditions, who may need extra support to stay cool.
“ As temperatures rise, it’s important that everyone takes steps to protect themselves and others. At amber alert level, we are more likely to see impacts on health services, but there are things we can do to stay well.
Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains or blinds that face the sun and check in on family, friends and neighbours if they need additional support.
If you’re going outdoors, take bottled water and drink fluids regularly, apply sunscreen regularly, wear light-coloured loose clothing, and avoid the sun during peak hours between 11am and 3pm.
It’s also important to recognise the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. If you or someone else feels unwell, dizzy, weak, or extremely thirsty, move to somewhere cool, drink fluids and rest.
If you have younger children, take extra care to ensure they are protected from the heat, as they can become unwell more quickly. “
Residents are strongly encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours, relatives and friends during periods of hot weather, particularly those who live alone or have existing health conditions.
