Road closure planned to allow next phase of York’s Bridge works

The next phase of the York’s Bridge project in Pelsall is set to begin.
The project will provide a new bridge over the Wyrley and Essington Canal along with major carriageway improvements. Practical completion of the project is expected by the end of 2025.
From Monday 29 September, Norton Road will be closed for ten weeks, 24 hours a day, between Charles Crescent and Nest Common. The closure, which will be removed on Tuesday December 16, is required to protect both the workforce and the public while critical engineering works are carried out.
This stage will see a series of complex tasks, including the construction of new embankments, retaining walls, drainage systems and gully connections. New surfaces, lighting, signage and road markings will also be installed.
A signed diversion route will be in place throughout the works linking the Walsall and Staffordshire areas. Access to individual properties and businesses will be maintained wherever possible.

Construction of the new York’s Bridge began in August 2024. Once complete, the new bridge will provide a safer route for all road users, including a two-way traffic bridge and a dedicated footway. The project will also deliver parking bays to improve access to Pelsall North Common, as well as two ponds and 540 trees planted as saplings.
The scheme is on track for practical completion by the end of 2025. Works outside this window will include fencing removal, subject to National England approval, which was put in place to protect great crested newts in the area during the work. There will also be tree planting, taking into account seasonal planting windows to give the landscape the best chance to thrive.
