Residents invited to have their say on new household food waste collections
Published on
Walsall Council is asking residents to share their views on how food waste should be collected from households across the borough.

The Environment Act 2021 requires local authorities in England to introduce weekly food waste collections. While the council must provide the service, using it is optional for residents.
The consultation sets out two possible options for how food waste could be collected:
Option 1 - separate weekly food waste collection + small electrical items
A separate weekly food waste collection, with households given a small kitchen caddy and a larger lockable kerbside caddy.
- Includes free doorstep collection of small electrical items.
- Adds approximately £1.7 million per year to the cost of waste services.
Option 2 - mixed food and garden waste collection
A weekly mixed food and garden waste collection, using the existing brown wheeled bin.
- Does not include doorstep collection of small electrical items.
- Adds approximately £2.6 million per year to the cost of waste services.
“ Food waste makes up a significant proportion of what we throw away.
“We want to make sure the service works for our residents, which is why we’re asking for your views before final decisions are made.
“Your feedback will help us shape a service that is effective and works for you.
“
As part of the consultation, residents are also invited to share their views on general concerns about food waste collections and how their bins are collected.
The consultation will run until 7 November 2025. Residents can complete the survey online at: https://go.walsall.gov.uk/your-council/consultations/current-and-past-consultations/food-waste-consultation-2025
