Raised litter bins help cut fly-tipping in Caldmore

A project trialling raised litter bins has significantly reduced fly-tipping in a hotspot location.

Three wall-mounted bins were installed in October 2025 around St Michael Street car park, an alleyway near Caldmore Primary Academy and community gardens, and Caldmore Green.

Permission was secured from Caldmore Community Garden and Caldmore Primary Academy to mount the bins on their fence posts.

The results over the past four and a half months have been encouraging:

St Michael Street car park: 1 reported fly-tip since installation, compared to 16 in the previous 12 months.

Carless Street (near the school and community gardens): 0 reported fly-tips since installation, compared to 11 in the previous 12 months.

Caldmore Green alleyway: 1 reported fly-tip since installation, compared to 6 in the previous 12 months.

The project also included a strong community engagement element. Pupils at Caldmore Primary Academy were invited to design labels for the front of the new bins, helping to build a sense of pride and ownership in the area.

Three winning designs, created by Jessika Kasbia, Jennifer Kasbia and Magda Webster have now been installed on the bins.

“ This is a fantastic example of how innovation, data and community involvement can come together to make a real difference. The reduction in fly-tipping in these locations shows that simple, well-thought-out changes can have a significant impact.

“I want to thank Caldmore Primary Academy and the local community for getting behind the initiative. By involving young people and creating a sense of ownership, we are not only improving the environment now but helping to shape attitudes for the future. “

The council is now considering whether this approach could be expanded more widely across the borough, particularly in areas where litter bins are repeatedly misused as informal waste collection points.

The raised bin initiative forms part of Walsall Council’s wider commitment to reducing litter and fly-tipping, supporting cleaner, safer neighbourhoods and encouraging community pride.
