Plans unveiled for managed flag display at Brownhills Miner Island

Published on

Walsall Council has outlined proposals to introduce a managed flag display at Brownhills Miner Island.

Walsall Council House

Since September 2025, Union and St George’s flags have been in place along the Chester Road North approach to Miner Island and around the island itself.

The council has recognised the positive intentions behind the displays throughout, while highlighting the need to ensure public safety, maintain the local environment and support community cohesion.

Under the new proposals, all existing flags would be removed and replaced with a permanent installation featuring three 6-metre flagpoles displaying the Union Flag, the St George’s Cross and the Black Country Flag. A crescent of 3-metre flagpoles and twelve street-lighting column banners will frame and enhance the display.

The new proposals have been created collaboratively with local community representatives and ward councillors. In the weeks ahead, engagement with Brownhills residents will take place to get their feedback before the design is finalised.

“ “Brownhills has a strong sense of community and pride in its heritage, and it’s clear that many residents want to celebrate that.

“Our role as a council is to support those positive expressions of community pride while ensuring public spaces remain safe, welcoming and well maintained for everyone.

“This proposal creates a managed display that ensures Brownhills can continue to celebrate what makes the town special while addressing the safety and maintenance concerns that have been raised. “

Councillor Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities

The proposals also form part of wider work to maintain and enhance the Miner Statue, one of Brownhills’ best-known landmarks. In April, trees along the path below the island will be cut back to restore views of the statue from surrounding areas, ahead of its 20th anniversary in May 2026.

“ The Miner Statue is an important symbol of Brownhills and the town’s proud mining heritage. As ward councillors, we have consistently supported the installation of permanent flagpoles at Miner Island as a positive way to celebrate our town and reflect the strong sense of civic pride within the community.

“These proposals provide a more structured and lasting way to celebrate Brownhills, while also ensuring the area remains safe, well maintained and representative of the wider Brownhills community.

“With the 20th anniversary of the Miner Statue coming up in May, this is a valuable opportunity to highlight the town’s history and the pride local people have in Brownhills. “

Councillor Kerry Murphy, Councillor John Murray and Councillor Kenneth Ferguson

Once plans have been finalised, installation will be completed ahead of the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Miner Statue in May.
