Waste and recycling

One week left to have your say on new household food waste collections

Published on

Walsall residents have just one week left to share their views on how food waste should be collected from homes across the borough.

The consultation, which closes on Friday 7 November 2025, asks for feedback on two potential options for the delivery of a new weekly food waste collection service required under the Environment Act 2021.

While the council must introduce a food waste collection, using it will remain optional for residents.

The two options under consideration are:

Option 1 - separate weekly food waste collection + small electrical items

A separate weekly food waste collection, with households given a small kitchen caddy and a larger lockable kerbside caddy.

  • Includes free doorstep collection of small electrical items.
  • Adds approximately £1.7 million per year to the cost of waste services.

Option 2 - mixed food and garden waste collection

A weekly mixed food and garden waste collection, using the existing brown wheeled bin.

  • Does not include doorstep collection of small electrical items.
  • Adds approximately £2.6 million per year to the cost of waste services.

“ Food waste makes up a significant proportion of what we throw away, and how we manage it has a real impact on our environment and our communities.

“We want this new service to be effective and convenient for residents, so it’s vital we hear your views - your feedback will help shape how food waste is collected across Walsall for years to come. “

Councillor Suky Samra, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene
