The new homes at Fountains Way and Margam Crescent not only address the growing demand for housing in the area but also provide a boost to the community by supporting skills development and job opportunities.

The funding, from Walsall Council’s Construction Skills through Regeneration (CStR) Programme enabled whg, in partnership with developers J. Harper & Sons (Leominster) Limited, to transform two unused brownfield garage sites into vibrant new communities. The completed developments provide 10 homes for affordable rent.

Fiona Fell, whg Project Manager, Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, and Ryan Cockering, J. Harper & Sons’ Senior Contracts Manager visited the finished homes which are designed with sustainability and modern living in mind; featuring thermal roof insulation, PV panels, EV charging points they achieve an impressive EPC B energy rating.

In addition to delivering much-needed housing, the project also supported local skills development. whg collaborated with Walsall College to provide local construction students with valuable hands-on work experience. These students not only gained industry-relevant skills but also had the unique opportunity to observe and contribute to the transformation of these sites while completing their studies.

“ The Construction Skills Through Regeneration programme is an excellent example of how we can work together with local partner organisations to ensure that investment in Walsall directly benefits local people, providing opportunities to gain skills and employment.

It’s great to see these small, challenging sites brought back into use for the community, providing affordable and quality homes. “

Through this grant, we are able to provide local residents with the essential skills they need to succeed in the construction industry and empower local people to build better futures while contributing to the growth of our community.”

Antony Rees, Group Managing Director at J. Harper & Sons, said: “We are proud of the transformation we have achieved with these former brownfield sites, in successful collaboration with whg, creating much-needed sustainable and affordable living options for the community of Bloxwich.

“We strive to bring benefits beyond the build and are pleased to have made tangible contributions towards the betterment of the local area by supporting local businesses, retaining regional spending, and providing opportunities for local students to advance their careers in construction.”

The CStR programme, delivered as part of the Bloxwich Town Deal, is a key driver of regeneration in the area. It is supporting the development of new homes, promoting the sustainable use of derelict sites, and providing funding to help local residents access training and employment opportunities.
