Moving Towards Net Zero: Walsall Church leading the way

A church in Walsall is leading by example in the move towards Net Zero.

Rushall Parish Church is the first in the Lichfield Diocese to be awarded the Gold standard in the Eco Awards, the highest award available.

The Eco Church awards highlight churches that take action in a number of areas including buildings, energy, land and nature.

Walsall Council launched its Net Zero 2041 Strategy this year, designed not only to reduce emissions but also to create new economic opportunities, improve residents’ quality of life, and build resilient communities.

Communities serve as a key aspect of the strategy, and Rushall Parish Church has taken steps which showcase how Net Zero can work for everyone.

At the church, energy-saving methods such as the installation of LED lighting and timed water taps have been installed, resulting in savings. A QR code system has also been implemented, to reduce the need for the printing of hymn sheets.

Rushall Parish Church has also embraced rewilding, working with the council to maintain certain areas of the churchyard, while allowing others to flourish and thrive – much to the benefit of the local wildlife.

“ Rushall Parish Church is a shining example of how communities can play a vital role in tackling climate change.

“Their commitment to sustainability not only helps us move closer to our Net Zero goals, but also shows how simple, thoughtful changes can make a real difference. We hope their success will inspire others across the borough to take action. “

Councillor Suky Samra, Portfolio Holder for Street Pride at Walsall Council

“ We are very proud to achieve the Gold Eco Church standard. The award is a testament to the hard work of the team, with help along the way from Walsall Council.

“The Eco Church awards showcase good work that looks after our environment and communities. “

Bob Barnard, Church Warden

As part of Walsall Council’s Net Zero strategy, the Walsall Net Zero Partnership has been set up to unite local organisations, businesses, and public bodies. The partnership will develop a borough-wide Net Zero plan, monitor progress, and ensure that the transition supports economic growth and social well-being for all.  St. Michael's will be extended an invitation to contribute to the partnership’s work where they will bring invaluable community level expertise.
