Meet the monster bins helping children recycle

Five monster-themed recycling bins have been installed between Smith House and Thomas House in Walsall, helping children learn about recycling in a fun and interactive way.
The initiative is a partnership between whg and Walsall Council, launched as part of Recycle Week. It aims to support better waste management while exploring whether colourful, child-friendly facilities can encourage younger residents to recycle.
Each bin has its own colour and character to help children and families identify where different materials should go.
Councillor Ian Benton, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene and Enforcement, said, “Helping residents understand how and why to recycle is an important part of our wider work to reduce waste and improve recycling across Walsall.
“By working in partnership with whg to make recycling more accessible and engaging for children, we hope to encourage positive habits from an early age. Small, practical initiatives like this can help families make recycling part of everyday life.”
Ashley Parkin, Assistant Manager in Neighbourhood Services at whg, said, "These recycling bins have been introduced to help improve the appearance and cleanliness of our neighbourhoods and estates, while making recycling more accessible for customers.
By creating fun and engaging ways to start conversations about recycling between parents and their children, we hope to inspire positive habits from an early age. If we can encourage the next generation to take an active interest in recycling, we can help create a more sustainable future for everyone."
The partnership supports Walsall’s wider waste strategy, which aims to increase recycling, reduce waste and encourage residents, schools, businesses and community groups to play an active role in creating a more sustainable borough.
Residents can also help keep shared bin areas tidy by:
- Keeping communal bins accessible and avoiding overfilling them.
- Flattening cardboard boxes and breaking down bulky packaging before recycling.
- Never leaving rubbish on the floor, where it can attract pests and create health and safety risks.
- Taking large or bulky items to a recycling centre or arranging a collection through the local council.
