Major maintenance programme underway along Black Country Route

A major 12-week programme of maintenance is now underway along the Black Country Route.

The works, which began on Sunday 19 October, will see sections of the route thoroughly cleared and restored over the coming months.
The Black Country Route, one of the borough’s busiest stretches of road, has not been readily accessible for maintenance during the M6 Junction 10 improvement works, which limited opportunities for lane closures.
Crews are now undertaking a wide range of essential works, including:
- Cutting back hedges and overgrown vegetation
- Pruning trees
- Removing weeds and silt build-up
- Litter picking and road sweeping
To make best use of road closures, the project of work is being coordinated with partner agencies to include alongside gully cleaning and road lighting repairs.
“ This clean-up was one of my priorities when I took on the role earlier this year, and I’m delighted to see it now taking place. The Black Country Route is one of our key gateways, and it’s great to see it being restored to the high standard our residents expect and deserve.
“Access to the area has been challenging in recent years due to the lengthy improvement works on the M6, which made some maintenance more difficult, so it’s especially pleasing to see this work now being completed.
“The work being carried out will make a real difference to the appearance of the road, and I’d like to thank our teams for their dedication and skill in delivering such high-quality results. “
The 12-week schedule will continue through to early February 2026, with works taking place only on Sundays, to minimise disruption to traffic.
Sections of the route will be tackled in stages, with temporary lane closures in place while work is carried out.
