Have Your Say: Planning Obligations Supplementary Planning Document Consultation Now Open

Published on

Walsall Council is inviting residents, businesses, and stakeholders to share their views on a new draft Planning Obligations Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

Parks and countryside

This important document outlines how developer contributions, commonly known as Section 106 planning obligations, will be used to support local infrastructure and services as new developments come forward across the borough.

“ New developments bring more homes, jobs, and investment for our communities, but they can also put pressure on things like transport, schools, parks, and community facilities.

It’s important that residents have their say on the draft Supplementary Planning Document because it outlines how we propose to mitigate the impacts of developments through developer contributions. Ultimately this will help us ensure that the necessary infrastructure and services are delivered to support sustainable growth for our communities “

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader
Walsall Council

The draft SPD provides guidance on key points including:

  • When planning obligations may be required
  • What types of contributions developers might need to make
  • How these contributions will be used to support local infrastructure

Examples of planning obligations include:

  • Affordable housing
  • Improved transport links (e.g. cycle paths, bus services)
  • Enhancing green spaces and protecting wildlife

Feedback from residents will help shape the final version of the SPD. Once adopted, it will replace existing guidance and inform decisions on future developments in Walsall.

The consultation opens on Wednesday 24 September and will close on Wednesday 5 November. View the draft SPD and contribute to the survey on the Walsall Council website.

Hard copies of the SPD, surveys and pre-paid envelopes are available from the 7 libraries across the borough for those that need them.
