Get outdoors and help protect local wildlife at Pelsall North Common

Published on

People in Walsall are being invited to get outdoors, learn practical conservation skills and help protect local wildlife at a special volunteer day at Pelsall North Common.

Heathland

Walsall Council Countryside Services, Walsall Conservation Volunteers and the Birmingham and Black Country Amphibian and Reptile Group (BBCARG) are joining forces for the Heathland Heroes event on Saturday 7 November.

Volunteers will take part in practical conservation work, including clearing scrub and removing birch trees that are encroaching on the open heathland.

As well as helping to care for an important local nature site, taking part provides an opportunity to:

  • Learn practical conservation skills and find out more about local wildlife
  • Spend time outdoors and enjoy the natural environment
  • Meet other people with an interest in nature and the local area
  • Make a visible difference to a local habitat
  • Help create better conditions for heathland wildlife, including common lizards

“ Pelsall North Common is an important local habitat, and this event is a great opportunity to get outdoors, learn more about our local wildlife and make a practical difference. I would encourage anyone interested in nature to come along and get involved. “

Councillor Matt Eason, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing

The work will help encourage the regeneration and expansion of heather, improve habitat for heathland species and support biodiversity across Pelsall North Common.

No previous conservation experience is needed. Tools, guidance and support will be provided, so the event is suitable for people who are new to practical conservation as well as those with previous experience.

The Heathland Heroes volunteer day will take place from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 7 November. Volunteers should meet at Wood Lane car park, Pelsall, WS3 5DZ.
