Falls Prevention Awareness Week encourages Walsall residents to stay active, strong and independent
Published on
Walsall Council is highlighting simple steps residents can take to stay active, strong and independent during Falls Prevention Awareness Week (21-25 September), as part of its wider Healthy Ageing campaign.
Looking after strength, balance and overall wellbeing can help residents continue doing the things that matter to them. Simple actions such as staying active, taking part in strength and balance activities and accessing local support can make a positive difference.
“ Falls Prevention Awareness Week is a chance to highlight the positive steps people can take to maintain their strength, confidence and independence.
Many people are already supporting their wellbeing by staying active, spending time with family and friends and taking part in community activities. Whether it is adding more movement into your day, joining a local activity or finding ways to stay connected, there are opportunities across Walsall to help residents remain active, engaged and independent. “
The Health in Later Life Physical Activity Programme is a Walsall Council Public Health initiative that supports residents aged 50 and over to improve their strength, balance and mobility.
Delivered in partnership with the voluntary and community sector (VCS) locality leads, the programme provides opportunities for residents aged 50 and over to take part in strength, balance and mobility activities in community settings across the borough. The sessions are designed to help people improve fitness and confidence, reduce their risk of falls and maintain their independence, while also benefiting from social interaction and support.
“ Falls can have a significant impact on people's health and wellbeing, so early prevention is vital. Through the programme, we are helping residents build strength, improve mobility and gain practical knowledge that supports safer, more independent living. “
The positive impact of the programme is reflected in the experiences of participants. One resident said: “I really enjoy the sessions; they have helped me physically and mentally.”
Another participant said: “This session is the highlight of my week. If I don't attend, I really feel it in my body. When I do attend, we have a lovely time, it's good fun and very sociable. It's great exercise, but it's also the social aspect. If you don't move it, you lose it.”
There are steps that residents can take to help reduce their risk of falling. This includes keeping active, eating well, staying hydrated, attending regular eye and hearing checks, reviewing medications when needed, reducing trip hazards at home and staying connected with others in their community.
Bloxwich Community Partnership is hosting a Falls Prevention Talk on Wednesday 23 September at 10:30am at the Stan Ball Centre (Abbotts Street, Walsall, WS3 3AZ), hosted by Nadene Davis from Vitality Care & Support Services. All are welcome to attend. To find out more, call 01922 403351.

Additional feedback from partner organisations.
Paul Lewin, Chair of Trustees, PAL Charity said: “We are incredibly grateful to Walsall Public Health for investing in community-based prevention services that help older adults stay active, independent and connected. Our evidence-based falls prevention programmes empower people aged 50+ with the strength, balance and confidence to maintain their independence, reduce their risk of falling, and continue enjoying everyday life. By delivering welcoming sessions in local communities, we are not only improving physical wellbeing but also helping to reduce isolation and build healthier, more resilient communities.”
Shuniece Walker-Cusack, Director of The Getting Fit Company CIC, said: “Exercise is so much more than staying physically active. As we get older, it helps people maintain their independence through strengthening their muscles and bones, keeping their minds engaged, and remaining confident with movement. Exercise also helps people stay connected with others and feel supported, encouraging continued participation in exercise.”
