Organised by The Society of Master Saddlers, the free-to-visit event will take place at Walsall Town Hall on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the people, skills and businesses behind an industry for which Walsall is renowned.

Held under the banner ‘The Home of British Saddlery’, the Expo will celebrate Walsall’s longstanding contribution to British saddlery and leather craftsmanship, while highlighting how the industry is evolving and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Visitors will be able to discover the wide range of skills involved in British saddlery, from leatherworking, saddle making, pattern cutting and stitching to manufacturing, design, business and sales.

The event will also provide an opportunity for schools, colleges, young people, parents and careers advisers to meet businesses, see skilled craftsmanship first-hand and find out more about career routes within the industry.

“ Walsall has a proud history of saddlery and leather craftsmanship, and it is fantastic to see this heritage being celebrated while also showcasing the future of the industry.

The Expo is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to discover the skills and businesses that have helped put Walsall on the map, while inspiring young people to consider the wide range of creative, practical and professional careers available within the sector.

I’d encourage people to come along to Walsall Town Hall, find out more about this important part of our local heritage and meet the talented people continuing to shape the industry today. “

Councillor Matt Eason, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health & Wellbeing
Walsall Council

“ Walsall has a special place in the story of British saddlery and, as someone born and brought up in the town, I’m incredibly proud of that connection.

What makes the industry so exciting is the way businesses are combining traditional skills and craftsmanship with innovative production methods and new technologies.

Walsall Expo is a chance to showcase that evolving industry and inspire the next generation to be part of its future “

Jo Byrne, Chief Executive
The Society of Master Saddlers

For young people interested in practical and creative careers, the Expo offers the chance to see skilled work in action and speak directly to people working in the industry.

The free event will also allow anyone interested in British manufacturing, leatherwork, design, business, retail and craftsmanship, as well as equestrian-related careers.

Schools, colleges, careers advisers, parents and young people are encouraged to come along, ask questions and discover the opportunities available within an important part of Walsall’s manufacturing heritage.
