The exhibition is free and open to all.

It is the first time Walsall is hosting the touring exhibition, which was developed by Warwickshire Libraries in collaboration with Warwickshire schools, Romany Gypsy artist Gemma Lees, Warwickshire Police, and the GRT community groups.

The exhibition will showcase artwork from primary school pupils, traditional crafts, and interactive storytelling that highlight the rich cultural heritage and contributions of GRT communities.

“ We are honoured to host this inspiring exhibition in Walsall, providing a platform to celebrate the achievements and resilience of our Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities. Events like this foster understanding, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the rich mix of cultures that contribute to our borough’s diversity. “

Councillor Gary Flint, Walsall Council's Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing.

Walsall Council provides a permanent site and transit site for GRT communities across the borough, promoting social inclusion. This reduces unauthorised encampments and ensures access to essential services through consultation and planning.

This year’s national theme for GRTHM, “Who Inspires You?”, celebrates the heroes and role models within Romany Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller, New Traveller, Showmen, and Liveaboard Boater communities.

The exhibition will be held from 10am to 2pm on Monday, 16 June 2025.

The participating service providers and community representatives come under the umbrella of the Warwickshire GRT engagement group.

Visitors to the exhibition can look forward to exploring exhibits such as proggy rug making, basket weaving, and story dolls inspired by the Black Patch Gypsies. Bilingual Romani storybooks and videos will provide an immersive experience into GRT narratives. The exhibition will also showcase upcycled bottle cap art of the Romani flag and a reading of Gemma Lees’ celebratory poem “Romany.”

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month was established in the UK in 2008 and aims to promote knowledge of GRT histories, cultures, and contributions to society, while challenging prejudice and discrimination.
