Council agrees revised approach to climate and environmental action

Walsall Council has agreed a revised approach to climate and environmental action, focused on delivering practical local benefits for residents and making best use of council resources.
A Notice of Motion was considered and approved by Full Council on Monday 27 July 2026. The motion agreed that the council will rescind its climate emergency declaration and focus resources on practical environmental measures that deliver direct benefits for residents.
The Notice of Motion was proposed by Councillor Elaine Williams, Leader of Walsall Council, and Councillor Nicky Barker, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council.
“ This administration is committed to delivering best value for residents and making sure council resources are focused where they can have the greatest impact.
“It’s about taking a practical, common-sense approach - one that is proportionate, realistic and deliverable, and clearly linked to better outcomes for local people.
“This council remains committed to focusing on practical action that supports residents and communities. That includes improving energy efficiency, protecting green spaces, helping households and working with partners to strengthen community resilience.
“A climate emergency declaration is not the only way to make progress. What matters most is delivering tangible outcomes that improve everyday life for the people of Walsall and focusing our limited resources where they are most needed. “
As part of the agreed motion, the council will rescind the climate emergency declaration made in September 2019 and review available resources to make sure investment is targeted on practical interventions where it can make the greatest difference locally. Officers will also review relevant internal spending and policies and report back to Cabinet for consideration.
