A Christmas Message from the Mayor of Walsall

I want to take this opportunity to send my warmest Christmas greetings to all residents across Walsall and the wider borough.

Mayor of Walsall

I want to take this opportunity to send my warmest Christmas greetings to all residents across Walsall and the wider borough.

As the year draws to a close, it’s a time to look back, say thank you, and look forward with hope. I must say it has been an honour to serve you all as Mayor and I am continually inspired by the community spirit shown by everyone in our borough.

Over the last few months. I have met countless community groups, volunteers, frontline workers, litter pickers, and our dedicated public service staff. A big thank you all for your dedication and kindness. Walsall is so proud of you.

This year was deeply significant for our Armed Forces Community. In May, it was a great honour to be part of the celebrations of 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day) followed by commemorations for VJ Day across the borough. In November, we also gathered to honour our heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. “We will remember them.”

The Summer brought another remarkable achievement. In July, our Council’s Children’s Services team received an Outstanding rating from Ofsted. The inspectors highlighted the positive impact of leaders on Social Work practice with children and families, describing Walsall Council as “a place where children are truly at the heart of everything we do.”

We also welcomed new opportunities and growth. It was a joy to officially launch fantastic new businesses, including the Bloxwich Launchpad and five community shops that provide low-cost essentials to residents facing the cost-of-living crisis.

It was also wonderful to see our Canal re-open after ten months of closure. Thank you to the Canal and River Trust for making sure it was safe.

Of Course, I was also delighted to officially open Walsall’s second MakerFest in September. It was a joy to see all the brilliant display of the borough’s local makers and to see everyone smiling and having fun.

Earlier this month, it was a pleasure to join Manor Hospital in welcoming reindeer Mistletoe and Michael and Santa Claus to the Children’s Ward. I loved sharing a festive storytelling session with young patients as they stamped their passports and decorated the tree. It was a joy to see so many smiling faces.

Another special highlight for me was the Christmas lights switch-on. Seeing thousands of residents and visitors come together to celebrate the start of the festive season has been truly inspiring. I’m excited to see this tradition continue to flourish.

I must also express my gratitude for all the support given to my chosen charities this year: The Stroke Association, The Local Hub (empowering our young people), and local animal rescue centres, where volunteer teams tirelessly care for abandoned animals.

As the days get darker and the months get colder, please do take care, look out for one another and enjoy this special time with family and friends.

On behalf of Walsall Council, I wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Councillor Louise Harrison, Mayor of Walsall
