Published on

Walsall Libraries and Archives is marking Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) History Month 2026 with a vibrant roaming exhibition celebrating the borough’s rich and diverse GRT heritage.

Pat Collins entrance

The free exhibition is open from Tuesday 16 June to Saturday 27 June 2026 at three community spaces across the Walsall borough. It will showcase the stories, contributions and legacy of individuals from Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities and explore how they have helped shape Walsall. It also aims to inspire younger generations to reflect on their identity, aspirations and future opportunities.

“ This exhibition reflects our continued commitment to celebrating the diversity that makes Walsall such a vibrant borough.

“For generations, Walsall has been home to Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller and other nomadic communities. This exhibition will shine a light on their important contributions and offers residents the opportunity to engage with stories that are too often underrepresented. “

Councillor Stuart Chapman MBE, Portfolio Holder for Housing Support, Resident Access and Communities
Walsall Council

The exhibition features archival photographs, historical records and community-created artwork which explores local heritage, including the story of former Mayor of Walsall Pat Collins, as well as wider insights into GRT cultures, identities and lived experiences.

The exhibition will be shown at:

  • Love Blakenall Community Hub, 79 Thames Road, Bloxwich, Walsall WS3 1PL
  • Bloxwich Library, Elmore Row, Bloxwich, Walsall WS3 2HR
  • Willenhall Library, 1 Walsall Street, Willenhall WV13 2EX

This year’s national theme for GRT History Month, “Onwards with Hope”, focuses on the aspirations and ambitions of Romany Gypsies, Roma, Irish Travellers, New Travellers, Showmen, and Liveaboard Boaters, encouraging communities to look ahead and consider the future we want to build together.
